If you are reading this you are probably wondering what does CC and BCC mean in the email space.

What does CC and BCC Mean?

The CC field in email stands for ‘Carbon Copy’ and the BCC field for ‘Blind Carbon Copy’. If these terms don’t make any sense to you right now, we will try to explain briefly what is the actual meaning of each of them and why they are so important in using them in your email communication especially for Rebump.

What does CC do?

CC stands for ‘Carbon Copy’ and it allows you to include someone who will recieve a copy of your email apart from you primary recipient. When you CC an email, all recipients in both the To and CC fields can see each other’s email addresses.

For Example, imagine you have scheduled a meeting with a client to discuss the details of a new project. Before the meeting, you want to send over some preliminary ideas and documents for them to review. At the same time, you think it’s important that your assistant is aware of these details to better manage your schedule and follow-ups.

You would send the email to the client by putting their email address in the “To” field and since your assistant also needs to be informed but is not the primary recipient, you would add your assistant’s email address in the “CC” field.

What does BCC do?

BCC stands for ‘Blind Carbon Copy’. Just like how CC works in an email, BCC sends a carbon copy of the email to someone. However, unlike CC, there is a major difference in how BCC works.

In the case of CC, the prospective client can see that your manager has been included in the email. To avoid this, i.e. if you want to keep the carbon copy recipients private, you need to use the BCC field.

All email addresses that are mentioned in the BCC field are kept hidden, so recipients in the To and CC fields are unable to see them.

Using the same example where you have scheduled a meeting with a client to discuss the details of a new project. But this time before the meeting, you decide to send over some preliminary ideas and documents for them to review. You also think it’s crucial for your assistant to be discreetly informed of these details to better manage your schedule and follow-ups, without making this visible to the client.

In this scenario, you would send the email to the client by putting their email address in the “To” field. To ensure that your assistant is informed without the client’s knowledge, you would add your assistant’s email address in the “BCC” field. Using BCC in this way helps maintain confidentiality while keeping relevant team members informed.

When should you use CC in email?

With CC you can select a main recipient and include other emails in the CC field to include them in the conversation.

  • If you want all the recipients to be able to see who else has received the email.
  • When it’s beneficial for everyone to know who else is being informed.
  • In situations where transparency is important and recipients know each other.

When should you use BCC in email?

The BCC field has several use cases. You can use it to hide the email addresses of recipients, making it ideal for scenarios where you want to keep some recipients secret.

  • When you have to send an email to many recipients, without sharing everyone’s email addresses.
  • When you want to keep someone in the loop without letting the original recipient know.
